Winter Cycling Basics

Dressing for winter cycling can be a bit of a challenge, but with the right gear, it can be a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here are some tips to help you dress appropriately for winter cycling:

  1. Start with a base layer: Choose a moisture-wicking base layer made of synthetic materials or merino wool to help regulate your body temperature and keep you dry.

  2. Add insulation: Layer up with insulating clothing to keep warm. Fleece or synthetic materials work well for this. Avoid cotton, as it absorbs moisture and can make you feel cold and clammy.

  3. Protect your extremities: Your hands, feet, and head are particularly vulnerable to the cold, so it's important to keep them warm. Wear gloves or mittens, warm socks, and a hat or headband to cover your ears.

  4. Don't forget about your face: A neck gaiter or scarf can help keep your face warm and protect it from the wind.

  5. Wear waterproof gear: It's a good idea to have at least one layer of waterproof clothing, such as a rain jacket or pants, to protect you from the elements.
